The city of Kerman is located in the southeast of Iran, close to an oasis in the desert Dasht-e-Lut. The city was founded in the 4th century and had great importance for the people who were traveling far along the trading routes between Iran and India. The age of carpets of this zone goes back to Safavid era. Due to the location of this city, it was far from the main governmental issues and this fact allowed artisans to prosper the carpet weaving. Kerman carpets are known as one of the oldest crafts in Iran that have many adherent around the world. Kerman carpets are considered as an elegant Persian art piece.

The carpet weaving has long been an important craft and carpets from Kerman are easily recognized. Kerman carpets have high density in the number of knots and in the weaving process, three wefts are used. The first and third wefts are in cotton, and the second one is in narrow silk. The knots of Kerman carpets are Persian knots which are asymmetrical. Due to the techniques of carpet weaving in Kerman, these carpets are known as elegant and beautiful in the world.

Another important reason that makes Kerman carpets famous is the combination of fine patterns and colors. Usually in regular Kerman carpets about 15 colors are used that this number increases to 30 in the elegant Kerman carpets. The dyeing process of Kerman carpets is manual with the use of natural materials such as walnut skin, pomegranate skin, etc.

The base color of Kerman carpets is often red, dark blue, and green, and the pattern is dominated by a centrally placed medallion together with a wide border filled with flowers. The carpets that were manufactured before World War I usually have different motifs, such as trees, animals and figural motifs, but recently Kerman carpets with medallion that is surrounded by flower, tree, and arabesque motifs are commonly weaved that have marvelous design which catches the eye.
