Persians are the bulk of the population in Iran, but there are also minorities. One of them is the Kurds living on the western part of the country, in the provinces of Kurdistan, Zanjan and Kermanshah. Kurds used to live like nomads, but nowadays they are more stable their main activity is agriculture.

The Kurds are known as expert knotters, in fact the rugs are well knotted with a high pile and an intense color scale. The patterns often have large geometric figures in faded colors. The pattern with diagonal squares is very common. Ancient Kurdish carpets have a wool warp, while modern ones have a cotton warp; both have the weft between two rows of knots.
