Wool preparation

The most important material in the process of creating a rug is sheep’s wool. After shearing, it is important to classify the different qualities, then clean and wash the wool to make it ready for spinning.

Before spinning, however, there is carding to prepare the wool and separate the fibers. Carding can be done mechanically, but in some villages it is still done by hand.

Spinning is done in various ways depending on the use; warp, weft or pile. In Iran, most spinning is still done by hand, often on the spinner, but nomadic women use the spindle for traditional spinning.

In countries such as China and Pakistan, all carpets are created with spinning machines.
