Carpet Designs (Part 2)

Previously on Carpet Designs (Part 1) we talked about the different patterns that are common in the design of a Persian carpet. In this article we want to explain two main reasons that give shape to a special design of the carpets that in jargon they call it “Gol afshan” . These two motifs are known as Eslimi (Arabesque) and Khatai which can be consider as the base of many carpet designs.

The overall flower design is one of the oldest Persian carpet designs that can be seen on mostly Kashanrugs. In general, overall flower design is a combination of Eslimi and Khatai flowers that are covering all over the field of the carpet. The Eslimi and Khatai motifs, together, are playing the role of leafs and flowers of the design which are connected together through curved lines as stems. This design is appreciated between carpet lovers because it is not focusing on the center of the carpet like medallion design, therefore, it is a wise choice for those who want to have a classic carpet in a modern environment. To understand better, we explain what “Eslimi” and “Khatai” means.

Eslimi (arabesque):

Eslimi is a profound design that can be appear on the Persian art pieces, especially carpets. Eslimi design is spiral shape that comes from the movement of the nature. The inspiration for the Eslimi design is based on tree leaves. Although Eslimi design is a decorative art that fits the culture principles of the ancient Persians, it was inspired by other notable influences such as Chinese and Byzantine art. Eslimi is one of the main carpet designs that can be seen on floral rugs.

Khatai:

Khatai is another design inspired by the movement of nature. The elements that appear on the Khatai design are petals and flowers that change from 3D shapes to refine 2D patterns. Khatai has many types depending on the type of flower. For example, rose and lily flowers are two main flowers that inspire the Khatai design. As we explained earlier in part 1 of this article, Shah abbasi is a kind of Khatai design that can appear on the Gol afshan design.

In the next part we will talk about other important motifs that are shaping the geometric designs of the stages.
