Origin and name:

Although the name “Kazak” comes from a historical region in the Caucasus, Kazak Perc rugs are made today mainly in Afghanistan, by skilled Turkmen artisans.

The term “Perc ” “Caucasian-style copy.” indicates a more recent and decorative type, often produced for the international market, but still faithful to traditional designs.

The patterns are predominantly geometric, with strong, linear and well-defined designs. Symbols such as:

• Gul (stylized floral motifs)
• Caucasian crosses
• Octagons, rhombuses, eight-pointed stars
• Central medallions flanked by minor elements

The patterns are often inherited from ancient Caucasian carpets such as those from Shirvan, Kuba, or Karabagh. Each symbol may have ancient meanings: protection, prosperity, fertility, etc.

Afghan Kazaks are famous for their strong, saturated colors, including:

• Ruby red
• Deep blue or cobalt
• Warm beige
• Emerald green
• Golden yellow

The colors are obtained from both natural dyes and modern resistant pigments.

Materials and processing:

• Hand-spun wool, sometimes dyed with natural pigments.
• Double knot knotting (Turkish/symmetric knot), typical of Afghan handicraft.
• Warp and weft usually made of wool or cotton.
• Medium knot density, allowing great definition of designs while maintaining an affordable price.
